  1. Working on payroll is tough. No one ever calls to tell you his or her paycheck was perfect this pay period.
  2. Common sense in not always common. Some people do awfully odd things at work.
  3. Being a people person isn’t the same as having HR experience (from my recruitment days).
  4. You have to become good at giving bad news (and kindness goes a long way).
  5. Even in the electronic age, we do enough paperwork to devastate a forest.
  6. We see some crazy things in job interviews (pictures of a prize bass, knife wound scar from a previous employer, lemon yellow business suits, etc.).
  7. HR professionals don’t want to be the viewed as the office police or office therapist.
  8. You can absolutely give too much information in a job interview.
  9. HR can be exciting one moment and terribly boring the next (tax law, anyone).
  10. A good sense of humor is a must in your tool box.
