- Working on payroll is tough. No one ever calls to tell you his or her paycheck was perfect this pay period.
- Common sense in not always common. Some people do awfully odd things at work.
- Being a people person isn’t the same as having HR experience (from my recruitment days).
- You have to become good at giving bad news (and kindness goes a long way).
- Even in the electronic age, we do enough paperwork to devastate a forest.
- We see some crazy things in job interviews (pictures of a prize bass, knife wound scar from a previous employer, lemon yellow business suits, etc.).
- HR professionals don’t want to be the viewed as the office police or office therapist.
- You can absolutely give too much information in a job interview.
- HR can be exciting one moment and terribly boring the next (tax law, anyone).
- A good sense of humor is a must in your tool box.
